As per market survey done by various survey organizations, the only industry which touches the most technology-related corporate segments is the telecommunications industry, which includes not just the local and long-distance telephone services, but also the advanced technology related services which include many things like wireless communications, satellites, fiber-optics and internet. Telecom is also completely involved with the entertainment industry. Cable TV operators, like Comcast, are presenting local call services and efficient Internet access. The connection of the telecom industry with the cable providers has become even so entwined into each other, as telecommunications firms such as AT&T are now selling television through the Internet, and are contending in contrast to cable operators for the consumer’s money.
The telecom industry stands at about a $4.7 trillion sector in 2012 making it the largest digitized industry. The market in United States itself runs to about $1.1 trillion in 2012. These estimates have been calculated from the Telecommunications Industry Association. It will not be wrong then to say that the telecom industry remains one of the biggest employment sectors in the world, with approximately 865,300 employees in the U.S. itself.
Information and Communication Technologies or ICT as it is called is a word that is puts a line between the normal world with all its other goods, services and networks that make up the global statistics and the telecommunications system. Areas which are with ICT include landlines, private networks, internet, wireless communications, and so on.
As per statistics in November 2011 we had approximately 5.9 billion wireless service contributions from all over the world. This is enormous, from about 4 billion in 2008 and 1.41 billion in 2003 to 4.7 trillion in 2012. But a lot of subscribers have more than one connection; therefore it is possible that the above mentioned numbers might not be entirely correct.
